This museum is within the city limits of Wilburton and provides a look back at the mining era of 1880 to 1930. The place is host to mining artifacts and information and is located in the last remaining house built by Hailey Ola Coal Company in 1901.
The Pittsburg County Genealogical and Historical Society Museum is housed in a 1903 building built by the
Great Western Coal and Coke Company and included on the National Register of Historical Places. At the society, visitors will find a research and genealogical library with Dawes Indian Rolls, as well as a small upstairs museum with mining and Native American artifacts. Open weekdays, free admission.
Situated in Tuskahoma, southeast of McAlester, the Choctaw Nation Council House and Museum showcases the history of the Choctaw Nation with exhibits of artifacts, clothing, paintings and photographs. A gift shop is also available on site.
The Oklahoma Prison Historical Museum showcases the history of the state's prison system and includes such exhibits as a ball and chain, prisoners' items and historical photographs. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, except for holidays.
This McAlester museum houses information about the mining past of the area as well as other artifacts. Native American exhibits and an art exhibit are also featured.
The Tannehill Family Heirlooms and Gun Museum is open by appointment only and offers an impressive gun collection, including hundreds of unusual weapons, as well as a doll collection featuring an original "Shirley Temple" doll and original pieces of clothing from early-day McAlester, including an actual prison issue uniform.
