The Battle of Honey Springs was a Civil War battle in 1863 for the control of what was then called Indian Territory. The battle was the largest fought in Indian Territory and, won by the Union, paved the way for the North capturing Fort Smith, controlling supply lines and dominating the region. Today, the historic site is open to the public and features an interpretive center operated by the Oklahoma Historical Society.
