The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve north of Pawhuska is owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy and is one of the largest tracts of remaining tallgrass prairie in the world. The preserve is home to over 2,000 bison and features scenic turnouts, hiking trails, picnic tables, breezeway information and public restrooms at its historic bunkhouse. Open year round, no admittance fee. Visitor center and bookshop open March through November.
Situated on 3,500 acres of land, the Woolaroc Ranch, Museum and Wildlife Preserve has more than 700 buffalo, dear, elk and other wildlife roaming freely on the property. The Woolaroc museum features western art, archeolgical specimens and Native American artifacts.
This state park, situated near Pawhuska, is in rolling hill country and is the gateway to Oklahoma's Tallgrass Prairie. Measuring 1,100 acres (445 ha) in size, the park features picnic shelters, RV campsites and cabins, a swimming pool, hiking trails, sport fields and courts, as well as fishing opportunities at Lookout Lake or in Sand Creek.
